The 8th of March is International Women’s Day when we celebrate the social, cultural, economic and political achievements of women everywhere as well as raising awareness of gender inequality. This year its specific theme is #BalanceforBetter
The first National Women’s Day observance held on 28 February 1909 in New York and organised by the Socialist Party of America.
The following year National Women’s Day was celebrated at the International Conference of Working Women in Copenhagen. Here Luise Zietz the German Socialist and Clara Zetkin the German Marxist theorist and advocate for women’s rights suggested the idea of an annual International Women’s Day.
The delegates from 17 countries all agreed and IWD was born.
Today, International Women’s Day is a public holiday in some countries and largely ignored elsewhere. In some places, it is a day of protest; in others it is a day that celebrates womanhood.
In the UK there are lots of events happening to celebrate International Women’s Day and to find one near you search for events on the IWD website
